Overview
The recent and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic highlights trauma and its effect on patients. According to the Webster dictionary, trauma is “an injury to living tissue caused by an extrinsic agent, a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury, and emotional upset.” As healthcare professionals, it is becoming increasingly important to be aware of ways in which trauma and past experiences — subtle or overt — can impact the care of patients, hence the basis for Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). TIC requires understanding that patients may have experienced trauma and serves to prevent re-traumatizing the patient when providing care through a variety of approaches. It must be understood that TIC is not a checklist of interventions but a continual process of ensuring safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, and empowerment of patient voices. Effective TIC also requires an understanding of cultural, historical, and gender issues. By understanding how to better support patients through TIC, clinicians can help move from a sentiment of identifying problems in a patient to one that explores the background of a patient and how this affects their behavior and health.
