Overview
On June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade in the decision Dobbs v. Jackson. Within a few days, half of the states restricted or illegalized abortion which will be damaging for our patients; nevertheless, it is important to note the history of political turbulence around the right to abortion that has led to the current landscape. These changes have both drastic negative health implications for our patients, liability implications for providers, and possible legal repercussions for individuals who assist patients in accessing abortion. Access to abortion has been severely restricted, and this has the greatest impact on marginalized communities and those with lower socioeconomic status in the United States. There are many negative health implications of illegalizing abortion, including but not limited to mental health effects of forced pregnancy, illegal abortions, delayed care, and the negative impact on other parts of routine care. As the response to this decision develops, it is critical that we are sharing accurate information, understanding how the supreme court decision affects our patients and ourselves, and understanding our role in advocating for essential healthcare.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. 1. Explain the background and history of abortion, including what is abortion, who is most affected by decisions surrounding abortion historically, and how decreasing access to abortion has a disproportionate effect on certain communities in the US
  2. 2. Describe why this happened now and introduce the political landscape and potential legal and liability impacts on providers
  3. 3. Discuss the health implications of decreasing access to abortion, including the effects of forced pregnancy, how to manage illegal abortions, delayed care, and how this decision is impacting other routine care
  4. 4. Address how to have these conversations with patients, providers, and other people, how this is specifically affecting New York State, and foster a discussion about what we can do to advocate for and support patients seeking abortions.
