Overview
Since 1981, the Medical Center has been caring for patients with HIV infection who live in the 22 county areas it serves. In May 1987, the NYS Department of Health designated Albany Medical Center as a regional AIDS Treatment Center, charged with the provision of a wide range of services to people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS. The designation as an AIDS Treatment Center allows for increased services, coordinated care, and a wider range of programs than would otherwise be available. AMC’s Division of HIV Medicine (DHIVM) is also the Northeast/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center, one of 8 nationwide, federally funded programs formed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals now offering or planning to offer services to persons infected with HIV. Federal funding originates for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Since 1991, our grant-supported HIV clinical education programs are offered to the upstate 47 county region to educate physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, clinical pharmacists, dentists, and dental hygienists on the latest HIV treatment strategies. One of the priorities of our federal grant is to disseminate updated guidelines to clinicians in our catchment relative to HIV and hepatitis C treatment. Our AETC faculty members have extensive expertise doing this, and recent guideline updates have prioritized this education series.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify common regimens used in HIV care, based upon current Department of Health and Human Services HIV Guidelines

  4. Review the pharmacology and potential for drug interactions with methadone, buprenorphine and other medications used in managing addition
  5. Review common classes of psychotropic medications such antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and stimulants
