Overview
The South Asian population is a unique group that faces unique challenges when it comes to cardiovascular health. In comparison to other ethnic groups, this group in particular faces increased cardiovascular risk and mortality in both native and non-native locations. This is due to high prevalence of excess body fat and adverse body fat patterning, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. To combat this increased risk, various recommendations can be implemented including an adjusted meal that substitutes in foods with lower glycemic indexes, culturally appropriate guidelines, early prevention techniques, and increased participation of South Asians in medical research, sampling, and clinical trials. Misinformation prevalent in the community should also be curbed through education.
