Overview
Throughout the past 20 years, there has been significant improvement in interventional cardiology technology. The advancement in technology has improved the quality of care for those suffering from coronary artery disease (CAD). More specifically, individuals who are older than age 65 endure age-related physiologic changes to their cardiovascular system that increases their risk to suffering from CAD. This leads to more factors to consider such as frailty, mobility status, cognitive function, etc. before undergoing a procedure. The new cardiology interventions have allowed procedures to be minimally invasive with less associated risks. Unfortunately, up until recently, individuals who are > 65 years with cardiac pathologies have been excluded from many major research studies involving the new cardiac technologies leading to a greater need for research in this field. In addition, ethical implications need to be considered in order to prioritize what is best for the geriatric patient.
