Overview
This one-day virtual multi-disciplinary conference is designed to increase the knowledge and confidence of clinicians that currently provide services to people with IDD and those that currently do not. The goal of the conference is to increase clinicians’ knowledge so they will be more likely to provide services to people with IDD. In addition, the conference will highlight some of the differences when providing health care to people with IDD as well as some of the similarities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Illustrate an increase in clinical acumen in treating people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  2. Learn about elements that have contributed to the success of these specialized units.
  3. Describe differences in treating people with IDD with respect to various health care services.
  4. Define cultural competency and discuss aspects of Culture Centered Care.
  5. Learn about the development of a specialized behavioral inpatient unit with a step-down residential service for people with developmental disabilities.
  6. Learn about some ongoing challenges for these units.
  7. Understand the need for a collaborative approach in order to adequately assess behavioral dysregulation.
  8. Understand the additional risks that need to be considered in using psychotropic medication in this population.
  9. List the most common types of diagnostic overshadowing in a clinical setting.
