Overview
Dengue fever is endemic to many areas of the world, including the sub-tropical Americas. In the last two decades, there has been a global surge of dengue outbreaks. In the last few years, there has been an unprecedented rise in dengue outbreaks across the world, including areas in the US that previously have not been exposed to dengue. Most recently, Puerto Rico declared a public health emergency in March of 2024 due to the exponential rise in dengue cases. Climate change and urbanization play a major role in the evolution of this disease

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  2. Examine world trends/US trends of dengue fever.
  3. Examine the recent events of the Puerto Rico outbreak, especially in the context of urbanization and climate change.
  4. Discuss the socioeconomic burden of disease.
  5. Explain what to look for as medical students/providers and what we can do to help.
