Overview
Caffeine is often utilized for its efficacy in increased vigilance
and focus. Medical students are particularly prone to the use of
caffeinated products as they are prone to high stress
environments and large amounts of study hours required for
satisfactory academic completion. As a result, caffeine
consumption may have a correlation to multiple variables
relevant to medical students, including stress level, gender
identity, and medical school progression. Possible benefits of
caffeine use include increased focus, increased endurance, and
decreased depression. However, possible harms of caffeine use
include heightened anxiety, insomnia, and withdrawal
symptoms. Medical students at AMC can benefit from
reflecting on what stressors drive them to consume caffeine as
well as lowering their caffeine intake or moving toward
healthier alternatives.
