Overview

This two-day multi-disciplinary conference is designed to increase the knowledge and confidence of clinicians that currently provide services to people with IDD and those that currently do not. The goal of the conference is to increase clinicians’ knowledge so they will be more likely to provide services to people with IDD. In addition, the conference will highlight some of the differences when providing health care to people with IDD as well as some of the similarities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe 2 main areas of research in the field of Down syndrome Alzheimer’s disease
  2. Name issues that families have that lead to a delay in learning about Alzheimer’s disease occurrence in the future
  3. Describe factors which will help connect research to everyday care practices
  4. Discuss the revised criteria for diagnosis and staging of Alzheimer’s Disease (including Down Syndrome patients)
  5. Discuss the Pathophysiology of the Alzheimer’s Disease.
  6. Discuss the Standard of Care Recommendations for Management and Disease Modifying Treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease.
  7. Appreciate the role of the clinician advocate working in the IDD arena. How "advocacy" can improve health outcomes across the lifespan.
  8. Describe the basics of identifying and initiating an "advocacy" campaign. Best methods to select data driven obstacles to health access for people with complex disabilities.
  9. Identify complex, multi-tiered policy concerns and simplify them in order to ensure support and promote realistic solutions.
  10. Identify key challenges faced by patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in medical and dental settings and describe how a transdisciplinary approach improves patient outcomes.
  11. Apply effective desensitization techniques and communication strategies to reduce fear and anxiety in patients with I/DD.
  12. Implement collaborative strategies between medical, dental, and behavioral professionals to improve access to and success in healthcare services for patients with I/DD.
  13. Increase awareness of and knowledge of Diabetes, frequency in special populations and screening recommendations.
  14. Gain understanding in how to introduce new foods to individuals with sensory sensitivity.
  15. Gain insight into importance of diet education for diabetes prevention and treatment and need for supportive habits in caregivers.
  16. Discuss Special Olympics diabetes prevention pilot and potential impact.
