Overview
Homelessness is a growing problem across the county, as well in Albany County. In 2020, 820 people were homeless on a given night in Albany County alone. Additionally, it is estimated that over one third of unhoused individuals struggle with a substance use disorder. The relationship between addiction and homelessness is complex, but each consequently affects the ability of the other to be addressed. Individuals experiencing homelessness with concurrent substance use disorders have competing needs that can make the approach towards treatments and stable housing difficult. However, there are community organizations and models in place that are working to solve this issue. Housing can be utilized as a form of healthcare, functioning to provide a basis on which additional health issues can be addressed. To best serve our patients and community, it is imperative to understand the types of housing and addiction services available both within and outside of Albany County, as well as potential barriers to access and success.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define homelessness and review the prevalence of those experiencing homelessness in the U.S. and in Albany County.
  2. Describe and explore the relationship between homelessness and addiction as well as the harmful effects of stigma
  3. Understand the different housing models and how individuals can connect to housing supports
  4. Review the current housing solutions on a larger scale as well as solutions specific to Albany County.
