Overview
Attending physicians will participate in a procedural skills training session focusing on HALO (high acuity, low occurrence) procedures. Procedures include pigtail pleural catheter placement, midline catheter placement, emergent cricothyrotomy, needle cricothyrotomy, and fiberoptic intubation. Small groups of attendees will rotate through a series of precepted stations where they will practice and receive formative feedback on performing these procedures. A variety of task trainers will be utilized. Attendees will also receive training on how to more effectively supervise and provide feedback to trainees (residents, PA’s, medical students, etc) performing these procedures.

Registration
Advanced registration is not required.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate how to perform a pigtail thoracostomy
  2. Demonstrate the “scalpel finger bougie” technique for performing a cricothyrotomy
  3. Demonstrate how to place a single and a double lumen midline intravenous catheter
  4. Demonstrate how to perform video-assisted fiberendoscopic intubation
  5. Describe techniques for providing feedback to learners performing procedures in the emergency department
