Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe key components of perioperative cardiovascular risk assessment.
  2. Recognize the role of cardiac biomarkers in perioperative evaluation.
  3. Review perioperative management of common cardiac medications, understand timing and rationale of medication adjustments.
  4. Relate the molecular structure of local anesthetics to the functional anatomy of axons
  5. Explain factors that impact onset and duration of action, absorption and distribution of local anesthetics
  6. Compare the metabolism pathways for ester and amide local anesthetics
  7. Order the common injection sites from least to greatest systemic absorption.
  8. List common uses for local anesthetics
  9. Identify signs and symptoms of adverse reactions associated with local anesthetic use
  10. Identify the relationship between nerve fiber diameter and local anesthetic onset
  11. Calculate toxic doses of commonly used local anesthetics
  12. Compare characteristics of commonly used local anesthetic
