Overview

The choice between regional and general anesthesia plays a critical role in perioperative outcomes, patient safety, and recovery. Advances in anesthetic techniques, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, and opioid-sparing strategies have increased the use of regional anesthesia across multiple surgical specialties. However, general anesthesia remains necessary and preferred in many clinical scenarios.

This presentation will review the fundamental principles of regional and general anesthesia, compare their risks and benefits, and discuss procedure-specific and patient-centered considerations that guide anesthetic decision-making.
